ENGL 2010 - Intermediate Writing
Reflection
Over the course of my Spring 2022 semester, I came to realize that English and writing are a bigger part of our lives than one might think. Writing doesn't have to be formal essays or full length stories; it's a part of our daily lives with work communications, text messages, and propaganda/advertisements for just about everything.
I was really able to see how much can be accomplished with writing this semester. Whether that's informing a group about an issue, or persuading an audience to take action. The threshold concepts of English 2010 have helped prepare me to be a better and more effective writer by understanding how to read "The Rhetorical Situation" and how to best act upon the situation.
THRESHOLD CONCEPTS:
1) WRITING: Writing is a resource people use to do things, be things, and make things in the world.
2) RHETORIC: Rhetoric provides a method for studying the work that language and writing do.
3) ACTION: Writing is a form of action. Through writing people respond to problems and can create change in the world.
4) DELIBERATION: Writing is a process of deliberation. It involves identifying and enacting choices, strategies, and moves.
5) ENGAGEMENT: Meaningful writing is achieved through sustained engagement in literate practices (e.g., thinking, researching, reading, interpreting, conversing) and through revision.
6) CONTINGENCY: The meanings and the effects of writing are contingent on situation, on readers, and on a text’s purposes/uses.
